We are a group of people who live in Settle offering weekend breaks in our own homes to asylum seekers living in Leeds .

We hosted 10 people in September 2019 and then 9 in March 2020 just before the lockdown. We work in partnership with LASSN, Leeds Asylum Support Network. They know all the guests referred to us and offered us training on asylum issues and how to be a good host.  We pay rail and bus fares for our guests and a small gift for the weekend and any incidental entrance fees.

For many of our guests this was the first time they had stayed in an English person’s home and for almost all it was the first time visiting the Dales. They were all really impressed by our waterfalls. A trip to see the Highland cattle  on the moor and visits to the charity shops were also praised. Hosts’ feedback  was also very positive; it’s a privilege getting to know so many courageous and interesting people and it helps Settle take its place as part of multi-racial Britain

Our intention is  to organise weekends in March, June and September for around 12 individuals but plans are on hold for now. Hosts provide breakfast and a packed lunch  for Saturday. Evening meals take place together in the Settle Quaker Meeting House. The last Saturday meal was cooked by two of our guests.

We have a group of people who can’t host but help supply us with food for the  evenings and Sunday meals. Many more people help with fundraising. We need around £270 for each weekend and have funds ready for the next one when it happens.
